Judy Griffin-McCabe
Purina Saddle Series
Open Champion

I am very excited to win the Purina Saddle Series.  Roper (Roping To Win) is kind of quirky and has a lot of personality but he is a lot of fun to ride and is very kind hearted.  He is a really free running horse so I have struggled to make consistent runs with him – especially in big outdoor arenas.  I am so proud of Roper this year because we have become more consistent and are placing more often in the 1D.  I purchased Roper from John and Cindy Baltezore about 5 years ago.  Their daughter Aimee Sorenson had done all of the hard work with him so I just had to learn to ride him.  Roper is a pretty nice team roping horse and my husband Seth uses him at some of the bigger ropings that he attends.

The Purina saddle is the second saddle that Roper has won since I have owned him.  He won a saddle at a team roping with my husband in 2009.  This makes him pretty special at our house.   Roper has been laid off four different times in his career and has always returned to running barrels stronger than ever.  Two of the lay-offs were because of serious injuries and the other two were because his owners (Aimee and then me)   were pregnant.  The best thing about Roper is that you know that he wants to be in the arena as much as you do – whether you are running barrels or roping steers.

I would like to thank Donna Rankin for continuing to put on quality barrel races and also the sponsors who make the nice awards possible.  Purina Horse Feed is a great product.  All of our horses are fed Omolene 500 and they look and feel great because of it.  If you ever have the opportunity to go to the Purina Research Farm in St. Louis, you should definitely go there.  You can see how much effort is put into insuring that Purina always produces a quality product.  I am excited to be able to ride a Bronco Billy’s saddle.  I have seen them and have heard good things about them from people who ride in them.  Also thanks to Hillcrest Animal Clinic, Fremont Parks and Recreation and the Sleep Inn.  We are very fortunate to have a facility as nice as Fremont, Donna to put on the barrel races and quality sponsors who help to award nice prizes.

James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows”.  I definitely feel as though Sister is nothing less than a gift from God.  Since we began running in 2006, every ride and every run has been a blessing.

Sister (Watch Rock N Easy) is definitely a creature of habit.  She finds comfort in routine, and is uneasy with change.  She has a timid personality and is not quick to trust.  Anyone that knows me knows that combining my personality with Sister’s doesn’t sound like a match made in heaven.  Starting out, we did have some personality clashes.  One similarity that stuck out from the start was that neither one of us back down.

While Sister's quirks were challenging at first, as our trust with each other grew, the things that were once an inconvenience became the things that I love most about her.

There is a saying that opposites attract, and that seemed to be the case with Sister and I.  The funny thing is how much alike we turned out to be.  I can’t imagine a day without her, she has changed me for the better and I am so grateful to have a horse like her.

Thank you to Donna for putting on the Purina series.   I'd also like to thank our amazing sponsors, office and arena help, and Sam Bliss for taking amazing photos.  In closing, congratulations to my good friend Judy McCabe on winning her first saddle!

Jamie Thomas
Purina Saddle Series
All Around Champion
Jamie Thomas with her All around saddle, Jim Hunter and Carol Martin, owners of Bronco Billy’s Saddles, Council Bluffs, Iowa.  A sponsor of the Purina Saddle Series.

My name in Jamie Thomas. I am 13 years old and a 8th grader at Syracuse High School. I've been riding horses since I was 5 years old. By the age of 8, I joined 4-H, showing in Western, English, and the speed events. Of course, this is where my love for speed began.

We purchased my horse, Annie (Watch Ann Glo) in 2005. She is now 11 years old and after a couple of years of knocked barrels and hard work, we now are running together as a great team.  Annie has been eating Strategy ever since we purchased her and loving it. We compete in NBHA, Nebraska Jr. High Rodeo, and show in 4-H.

One of my most memorable moments was winning the saddle in April 2010 in the Purina all around division. I would like to thank Donna Rankin and all of her Purina Saddle Series sponsors, including Fran Minnaert.  Also, I want to thank Jim and Carol from Bronco Billy’s for making such a beautiful saddle.

Anna Siggers

Purina Saddle Series
Pole Banding Champion

Skippa Rudy Bar (Rudy) and I really didn't care much about poles as we only did barrels.  That was up until last year when I participated in the Jerry Barrett Pole Bending Clinic. Jerry is a very nice man who gave me amazing tips. I used to run 30 second pole patterns. But, with his techniques and guidance, the last day of the Purina Saddle Series I ran a 20.935. Going to Jerry's clinic really got me to start liking Pole Bending and boosted my self esteem. He really helped me and I am very thankful that I went.

I want to thank the sponsors of the Purina Saddle Series -- Fran and Purina Mills, Jim and Carol from Bronco Billy’s, Dr. Stitch and Dr. McInteer from Hillcrest Animal Clinic and Sam Bliss.

I have to thank my mom, dad and brother for their support, like driving me places since I can't drive . . . YET!  For my aunt, uncle and cousins who take care of and provide Rudy for me.  And to Donna Rankin for sponsoring the events and the help she has given me.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me throughout the years. But especially thank you to Rudy for being the best horse that he could be.

We want to thank our sponsors,  Purina Mills Horse Feeds Saddle Series for purchasing the saddles, Bronco Billy’s Arena and Tack for making the saddles, Hillcrest Animal Clinic in Lincoln, Sleep Inn in Fremont, and Sam Bliss, photographer, for supporting the PSS series.
